What’s stopping you?

Applying for a job, asking someone out, booking a holiday, or trying something new often appears straightforward on the surface. Yet hesitation can take hold. When you pause, it can be useful to ask what story you are telling yourself about the situation and whether that story is accurate, balanced, or shaped by earlier experiences.

Most choices present more than a simple yes or no. Broadly speaking, you can proceed, decide not to proceed, reconsider the way you are thinking about the situation, or accept things as they are for now. If practical considerations such as finances are manageable, it may be worth exploring what else feels obstructive. Are there assumptions about failure, rejection, or risk? Are there alternative routes to the same outcome that you have not yet considered? Often there is more than one path towards a goal, and more than one decision that can move you in a meaningful direction.

Progress does not have to be dramatic to be significant. A single step towards what you want is still movement. Long term or ambitious goals can feel overwhelming, particularly when uncertainty and perceived obstacles dominate your thinking. It may help to think in terms of steady movement rather than immediate arrival. Each step has value in its own right and can be recognised as progress.

When life feels difficult and obstacles generate stress or frustration, speaking things through can bring greater clarity and confidence. This is one reason many people find therapy helpful. You do not need to be in crisis to begin. Therapy can provide space to reflect on your goals, consider what may be holding you back, and think constructively about how to move forward. The aims you bring are your own. They are not judged or graded. Having a trained professional alongside you to think carefully and objectively can make it easier to understand barriers and identify realistic next steps.

If this resonates and you would like to explore your own situation further, you are welcome to get in touch.
